During my trip to China, I attended a mesmerizing Sichuan Opera performance in Chengdu. One talented artist's precision intrigued me, leading to a conversation about her remarkable skill. The management kindly arranged a meeting, allowing me to learn directly from the dedicated performer. She shared her journey, highlighting that despite 12 years of experience, she still considered herself a learner of the art. What stood out was her daily routine—three hours of practice each day for a brief 10-minute performance. Surprisingly, she clarified that this time wasn't just for improvement but to maintain her exceptional standards. This encounter reinforced a vital lesson applicable across all fields: the basics remain crucial. Whether in the intricate world of Sichuan Opera or the corporate landscape, reaching the pinnacle requires steadfast commitment, dedication, and hard work. It's a reminder that success is less about inherent intelligence and more about the persistent effort invested in refining one's craft. Art, fine arts, history and philosophy. Today we are instead treated to invisible sculptures that fetch thousands, Banksy self-destructing art, the movie Babylon, that has as its central theme and plot the excessive sex and violence that used to be only subordinated to enchanting and entertaining plots. Serious doubts about science replaced with everyone's self-selected conspiracy theory, and a citizenry that doesn't bother with history, poetry and philosophy, so continues to make many mistakes that have been made many times already in history...~r Idiocracy dumbing down, as extremist politics brings seemingly everyone to the point of hatred and rage against the 'other,' whether 'other' is a political group, or a group that identifies with a particular variation across an almost infinite spectrum of genders and sexuality. No shortage of issues to enrage us. From virus vaccinations to immigration, to quote from the movie Network, "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore!"

Tonen Sara O’Connor (1932 - ) is a resident priest emerita at the Milwaukee Zen Center and from 1974 – 1995 as the managing director of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and Theatre Communications Group board president from 1980 to 1982. On Buddhism and Theatre: “I may be straining the analogy, but there are some things about the teachings of the Buddha, basic tenets of Buddhism, that seem very easy for me because of my life in the theatre. The Buddha taught impermanence. If you’ve ever created an entire world and whipped it down on closing night only to put up another world, you know something about impermanence. You also know a lot because people in the field have to be on the move all the time. There’s impermanence; there’s interdependence. Nothing happens without a reason. We don’t always know the reason, but everything comes from a cause, everything has an effect. What that means is that you can’t get out of the world. You are never singular. You’re impermanent, interdependent, governed by cause and effect, and as a result of that, you have no self, and that means no permanent self. You have a shifting, mobile, useful, constantly changing self, but you don’t have a permanent self you’ve got to protect. Certainly, in the theatre a fine actor’s ability to empathize, project, act and be many people is in some ways related to the fact that we’re all many people. We’re all reincarnating every second. We draw on African and Indigenous ways of knowing and being, starting with cultural humility and curiosity.  Our philosophy is intended to initiate a journey of investigation into the relationships between Ancestrality, Communality, and Affirmation (African aesthetic values first proposed by Trinidadian theatre maker Rawle Gibbons), and how they arrive in our mind, body, voice/breath, and spirit.
