As the Washington Commanders explore the possibility of relocating from their long-time home at FedEx Field to another site in the Washington, D.C., metro area, Prince George’s County leaders have pledged to move forward with other major development projects in the area. This new transit-oriented development, focused around Central Avenue in the heart of the county, will bring new jobs, businesses, walkable communities, and other desirable amenities to residents of the county.

In April, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced that lawmakers had secured $2.5 billion in aid for development around the county, the state’s largest-ever investment for Prince George’s County in a single legislative session.

Included in this sum is a $400 million investment to fuel development in the central part of the county along Metro’s Blue Line, an area dubbed the “Blue Line Corridor,” which includes FedEx Field, the longtime home of Washington’s NFL team, the Commanders. The funds are slated to help fund a new library, cultural center, and amphitheater as part of a new sports and entertainment district.

County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who introduced this vision for the future of the county last summer, remains confident that the development will move forward, regardless of the Commanders’ decision. Creating a vibrant, liveable community remains a top priority.

In an interview with WUSA-9, she stated, “Because we have lacked those amenities, our residents have had to go elsewhere to shop, to eat, to get medical care, to work. They get on these metros and they take their resources elsewhere. We want to be able to keep all those resources here at home.”
