WE ALL COUNT ON THE RIVER, BUT CAN THE RIVER COUNT ON US?

River Citizens – People the River can count on!

1 Mississippi is a program of the Mississippi River Network; it is the only public grassroots effort working for the entire River and throughout the Mississippi River Basin.  We unite and support a community of 20,000 River Citizens by offering education, inspiration, and opportunities to embrace and advocate for the Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River is truly America’s River – a critical source of drinking water for 20 million people, a diverse habitat for wildlife, the backbone of our economy and a rich part of our heritage. The Mississippi River unites us as a people and we rely on it more than most of us realize.

Today, our great River is in trouble. Pollution from untreated sewage, farms and factories, along with weak law enforcement have caused our great River to deteriorate. The River is part of us and our communities; its poor health impacts us all. The River needs our help.

Luckily, we can help by making simple changes in our lives and standing up for the River. The first step is to become a RIVER CITIZEN

River Citizens are people who want to restore and protect America’s greatest River. Whether in armchairs or wading boots, River Citizens protect the River by speaking up on its behalf and caring for it in simple ways that make a big difference. Together, we can protect the River for future generations.

Anyone can become a River Citizen, there is no cost to join, and we invite you to join the community! Take the first step and become a RIVER CITIZEN today. When you do, we’ll send you our free e-book, Scenes From Our Mighty Mississippi, an inspiring collection of images featuring the River. Can the River count on you?

Why I care About the River

The river is the life blood of the region and I want it to be clean!

Libby Reuter

Watershed Cairns Artist, Ilinois-based River Citizen

"I am a River Citizen because I was born at the headwaters of the Mississippi in Little Falls and grew up across from the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, IL (I biked there in summer of 2013 and saw there river display) I lived on Nicollet Island for 6 years in late 80’s and to mid 90’s…"

Elizabeth Irene Goodman Hallowell

"I am a River Citizen because the River is perfect. Man is not perfect. If man makes a mistake against the River, the River will find it, and exploit it."

John Barry
