Promoting quality education for all.

Thank You, Congresswoman Lowey!

GCE-US,
Thank You, Congresswoman Lowey!

The Global Campaign for Education-US (GCE-US) thanks Congresswoman Nita Lowey for her decades of dedication to international basic education. She will retire from Congress in January after 32 years of service, throughout which she consistently prioritized quality, universal education for all.

Among her many accomplishments, Congresswoman Lowey:

  • Led the Reinforcing Education Accountability and Development (READ) Act which facilitated the first-ever US’ Government Strategy on International Basic Education
  • Called upon the US Government to consider the needs of marginalized and vulnerable populations and do the necessary work to ensure the right to education for all
  • Emphasized the prioritization of women and girls in developing countries, including ensuring access to basic education programs and necessary health services
  • Strongly advocated for human rights, equality, fairness, and support for all, including those in the LGBTI community
  • Consistently championed robust funding for international basic education, including $975 million in the House’s FY2021 State and Foreign Operations and Related Programs bill

In addition to her international efforts, Rep. Lowey has been a powerful force and steadfast advocate for domestic education. She has led efforts to reduce class size by hiring new teachers, provide professional development programs for principals and superintendents, invest in school modernization so that students are able to learn in updated and present-day classrooms, increase students’ access to safe and educational afterschool activities when the school day is over, increase access and affordability for higher education, and improve access to STEM education.

As COVID-19 left at least 55.1 million children out of school in the United States, Congresswoman Lowey kept students at top of mind, and she worked to ensure that the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief fund covered K-12 education costs related to COVID-19.

We thank Congresswoman Lowey for her leadership, support, time, and dedication to the betterment of education for all. Thanks to her advocacy and commitment, more children around the world, including girls, marginalized groups, children with disabilities, and young people in conflict settings, have the opportunity to learn and grow to their full potential.

Together, the global education community thanked Congresswoman Lowey on October 9, 2020. Read more here.
