Help Test the New MBTA bus Wheelchair Securement System!

  • 5th Avenue Boston, MA, 02129 United States (map)

Calling All Wheelchair and Scooter Users:

Help Test the New MBTA bus Wheelchair Securement System!

For years, the MBTA has used a four-point manual securement system on buses to keep riders’ wheeled mobility devices in place. In 2021, they began piloting a new, fully automated system called Quantum.

Quantum uses a robotic arm that deploys around the device’s wheels, and automatically adjusts its grip throughout the trip to ensure safety. The system also allows riders to independently secure and release their device with the push of a button. It also promises more upper-body stability during abrupt stops.

The MBTA has arranged a Special Live Demonstration for the Spaulding-area community! You can drop in, or contact the MBTA Dept of Systemwide Accessibility (SWA) at swa@mbta.com or (617) 222-5254 to register.

Date: Friday November 5, 2021 (Rain date: November 12)

Time: 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Location: MBTA Bus Stop at 13th Street & 5th Avenue, Charlestown

For a sneak peek at the system, see this video featuring Rob Sampson, SWA Director (& quadriplegic) using it https://youtu.be/x3yEK5VDGwY or visit https://www.mbta.com/accessibility/whats-trending

P.S.-- Even if you currently don’t travel by MBTA transit bus, please help the broader community and advance the cause of wheelchair access in public transportation by participating in this demo! THANK YOU!
