July Results

Providers (formerly Fresh EBT) is a free mobile app that helps over 5 million low-income families manage their SNAP benefits. To understand how the circumstances in the lives of Providers users are changing, we have been conducting surveys each month.

July 2021 key findings

The following insights come from a 10-minute multiple choice and open response survey conducted by Providers to a random sample of 5,526 of over 5M Providers users from
July 1 - July 14, 2021. All respondents are EBT cardholders.

More Providers users are experiencing housing instability than ever before.

I have no water in my home. A neighbor lets me fill bottles with her outside tap. I gave her a bed and frame so she wouldn't have to sleep on the floor anymore. She was homeless with her two children. We help each other.

Users of color are disproportionately affected.

  • Black, Latinx, Native, and Asian Providers users were more likely to think they wouldn’t be able to stay in their current housing for the next 30 days.

  • Black respondents were almost twice as likely as white respondents to have had their utilities shut off in the past 30 days: 12% Black respondents compared to 7% of white respondents

  • Black respondents were also more likely to have been evicted by a court order: 1.2% of Black respondents compared to 0.5% of white respondents.

  • Native American respondents were significantly more likely to have spent at least one night in a shelter in the past 30 days: 9% of Native respondents compared to 4% of white respondents.

  • Latinx respondents were the least likely to have received rental assistance since March 2020: 9.0% of Latinx respondents compared to 13% of white respondents

The 84% of users receiving increased SNAP benefits are experiencing lower levels of food insecurity.

Those who received no additional SNAP benefits were more likely to:

  • Have skipped meals

  • Eaten less

  • Relied on others for meals

  • Not have most things they needed at home

  • Spent $300+ on food beyond benefits

  • Have $25 or less on hand

The ebt snap have helped me with extra stamps so that I can buy food for my family and neighbors that had no food.

A quarter of eligible users have not heard of the Child Tax Credit.

A quarter of eligible users have not heard of the Child Tax Credit

of Providers users with children under 18 have not heard of the 
Child Tax Credit, which would provide $250-300 per month 
per child.*

Latinx respondents were significantly less likely to have heard of the Child Tax Credit or think they are eligible to receive it.

  • 67% had heard of the Child Tax Credit 

    compared to 75% of white respondents.

  • 51% thought they were eligible to receive it

    compared to 59% of white respondents.

What do you plan or hope to do with the first Child Tax Credit payment?

I plan to save so that I can move. I am currently & unexpectedly homeless, this will help a great deal.

Providers users with children were more likely to have borrowed or used credit in the last 30 days:

  • 63% of respondents with children reported borrowing

    compared to 55% of respondents without children
