Alabama sees second highest total for daily coronavirus cases, records 25 more deaths

Alabama added 954 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, a large increase over case counts from recent days, and the second highest single-day uptick since the start of the pandemic. The new cases pushed the state’s 7-day rolling average up to almost 673, an 80-case increase over Tuesday’s average.

Alabama now has had 31,624 total virus cases since March. The Alabama Department of Public Health estimates 15,974 of those have recovered - a figure it updates only once a week.

ADPH also confirmed 25 new virus deaths in Alabama on Wednesday, bringing the statewide death total to 879. The state has confirmed 48 deaths in Alabama in the last two days alone, and the 7-day average for deaths now stands at 13.6, the highest it’s been in two weeks.

Testing has remained relatively flat in Alabama. The 7-day average for new tests is 6,856, though the state hasn’t reported more than 5,000 tests in a day for the last three days. The ratio of average new cases to average new tests is currently 9.8 percent. The 7-day average for new tests is inflated somewhat by a large number of tests reported last Thursday.

Mobile County added the most new cases on Wednesday with 112. It’s the most cases in a day in Mobile County since the start of the pandemic. Mobile was once the epicenter of the virus in Alabama, and still has the most virus deaths of any county in the state. Montgomery, which has the most confirmed virus cases in Alabama, and Jefferson, the most populous county in the state, each added 87 new cases Wednesday.
