Dixon continues attack on Whitmer education during Clinton Twp. rally

GOP gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon carried out her third campaign rally of the day on Friday in Clinton Township, where she continued her attack on Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s education record. 

Dixon pledged, if elected, she would offer more tutoring services for K-12 public schools students.  

“It is crucial that we get our kids back on track,” said Dixon to a crowd of about 150 during an outdoor effort held in the parking lot of Faith Baptist Church.  

Whitmer also has a plan to increase tutoring to help kids with learning loss, as the Advance has reported. Whitmer signed a Fiscal Year 2023 budget with funds for districts to develop learning pods for academically at-risk and economically disadvantaged students.

Dixon was joined by fellow Republicans, including Lt. Gov. nominee Shane Hernandez; GOP attorney general nominee Matt DePerno; GOP secretary of state nominee Kristina Karamo; and John James, the GOP nominee for Michigan’s 10th District U.S. House seat. 

On Tuesday, DePerno is facing Democratic Attorney General nominee Dana Nessel; Karamo is trying to oust Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson; and James is squaring off against Democratic former Judge Carl Marlinga.

During the 90-minute rally, Riley Gaines, a former all-American University of Kentucky female swimmer who competed against Lia Thomas, a transgender woman, spoke, as she did earlier at a Brighton rally on Friday. Gaines tied with Thomas for fifth place at the NCAA championships.In March, Thomas finished first in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, becoming the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA Divison I title. 

Gaines, who’s appeared on Fox News, has campaigned for Dixon and GOP South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem because of their support for bans on trans athletes in school sports. 

Dixon is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and moved to Michigan in 2002.

The Republican also stressed her pledge to sign a Florida-style “Don’t Say Gay” law.

“I am going to protect our kids from this content. We will pass a Florida-style bill to make sure that we have no sex and gender talk between kindergarten and the third grade and will make sure that this age inappropriate content and pornography is not in our schools for our kids to pick up,” said Dixon. 

A report, jointly released by the Center for Countering Digital Hate and the Human Rights Campaign, found that online hate against LGBTQ+ people shot up following Florida’s passage of the bill.
