Farm Bill and Poverty Data Social Media Outreach

September 18, 2023

Recently the U.S. Census Bureau released its Poverty in the United States: 2022 Report that includes estimates of poverty that help measure economic well-being in the United States. The report finds significant increases in overall poverty and child poverty in 2022 compared to 2021—increases that were largely driven by the expiration of pandemic relief programs. These findings provide an opportunity for advocates to urge lawmakers to protect and strengthen SNAP in the upcoming Farm Bill. With increasing numbers of children and families struggling to make ends meet, it's urgent that we fight to keep SNAP strong.

Help us spread the word about the recent data and urge your elected representatives to support a Farm Bill that protects and strengthens SNAP.

Please tag your Representative along with @SenSchumer @SenGillibrand and @RepJeffries.

General messages:

With child poverty increasing, we must remember that SNAP is our most effective tool to fight hunger. [@Congress member(s)] please support a #FarmBill that protects #SNAP and does not increase hunger. Cuts to #SNAP would push New Yorkers deeper into poverty. #SNAPMatters

@USCensusBureau data show the # of people with incomes below the poverty line in 2022 rose by 15.3 million and the child poverty rate doubled to 12.4%. The stakes for the upcoming #FarmBill—which sets eligibility and benefit amounts for #SNAP—couldn’t be higher. #SNAPMatters  [@Congress members]

U.S. Census Bureau data show that the number of people with incomes below the poverty line in 2022 rose a staggering 15.3 million due to the expiration of pandemic relief programs, and the child poverty rate doubled to 12.4%. Cuts to #SNAP would push New Yorkers already struggling to make ends meet deeper into poverty. In New York alone, SNAP helps over 2.8 million people put food on the table, with more than 53% of SNAP participants having families with children. The stakes for the upcoming #FarmBill—which sets eligibility and benefit amounts for SNAP—couldn’t be higher. We urge Congress to support a #FarmBill that protects and strengthens SNAP and does not increase hunger in our community. #SNAPMatters

As #FarmBill debates in Washington heat up, we need [@Congress member(s)] to continue to champion positive #SNAP changes and to stand up against any efforts to cut food assistance while poverty and hunger continue to rise in NYS.
