DENVER – Thursday, Aug. 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Overdoses on opioid drugs – both legal and illegal – have been on the rise in recent years and President Donald Trump declared the problem a ‘national emergency’ earlier this month. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 329 Coloradans died from prescription opioid overdoses in 2015.

Pharmacies around the state are helping to fight drug overdoses by offering the opioid overdose antidote naloxone to anyone without a prescription.

Many pharmacies also will take old or leftover prescription medications off your hands for no charge.

You’ll find a list of participating pharmacies at Colorado.gov/cdphe/pdo-prevention.
