In order to contribute to Missouri’s transformation into a land of opportunity for all, the Missouri legislature must create equitable access to higher education for all Missouri students, including those under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) and those who do not currently have a pathway to regularize their immigration status in the United States.
Over twenty states have “tuition equity” laws or policies that make going to college easier for undocumented students. Despite having grown up in the US and graduated from K-12 Missouri schools, many students are being charged an unfairly inflated rate of tuition at public institutions of higher education in their home state of Missouri.
Tuition equity has promising benefits for Missouri students and the future of our state. According to a bipartisan research group, if undocumented students attended in-state schools, this would increase our state’s spending power by at least $6.4 million and result in almost $800,000 more from state and local taxes. Tuition equity is one small change that our representatives can make to invest in Missouri students.
The Missouri legislature should remove the language in the Missouri budget bill that mandates state colleges and universities to charge undocumented students the tuition rate for international students AND pass legislation to ensure students can access in-state tuition rates. All Missouri students should have access to in-state tuition rates at all public institutions of higher education in Missouri.
