Solicitor General Liz Murrill jumps into attorney general’s race

Liz Murrill announced her candidacy for Louisiana attorney general Monday with a campaign video released online. She is currently the state’s solicitor general, the top litigator in the attorney general’s office.

“Louisiana elects a new AG in 2023,” a voiceover in the advertisement said. “Let’s go with our best advocate, the one protecting our families, our future and our freedom.”

Murrill, who previously served as executive counsel to Gov. Bobby Jindal, has worked under current Attorney General Jeff Landry, who is running for governor, since he took office in 2016.

She is expected to be joined in the race for the open seat by fellow Republican state Rep. John Stefanski of Crowley and District Attorney John Bolton, who represents Union and Lincoln parishes.

Murrill has joined Landry in championing right wing causes, including fighting the COVID-19 vaccine mandate and defending Louisiana’s restrictive abortion ban.
