NDRN Launches “Know Your Transportation Rights during COVID-19” Video

The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting every community in the nation. Shuttering schools and workplaces, slowing public transportation, and delaying community-based services. In this series of videos, the National Disability Rights Network explains what your rights are and what you can do if you believe your rights are being violated. We hope this series will help to strengthen self-advocacy, address racial inequities, and protect the rights/lives of people with disabilities. Videos on a wide variety of COVID-19 related topics will be released within the coming weeks and today we are rolling out the series with a focus on Transportation.

Nancy Pineles, an attorney from Disability Rights Maryland, has this message for passengers with disabilities.

  • The ADA still applies during the COVID-19 emergency
  • Transit agencies must still provide paratransit trips as long as regular buses or trains are running.
  • Transit agencies cannot deny paratransit trips because of the reason for the trip.
  • Bus drivers still need to let people use lifts or ramps for passengers that cannot use the rear door
  • Contact the Protection and Advocacy agency in your state if you are denied a necessary trip.
