Apply for the Ethnic and Social Equity Standards Advisory Working Group
Thank you for your interest in this opportunity! (Application due Wednesday, September 28th 2022) Right now we are just looking to fill one student seat for a high school student 9-12th grade.

Act 1 is a Vermont law that brings together the members of the public from different ethnic and social backgrounds, state government agencies and the education community to help tackle bias, discrimination, and inequity in Vermont Schools. The goal is to help schools better support the needs of young people PreK-12th grade who are underrepresented or marginalized like:

Women and girls
People with disabilities
Immigrants
Refugees
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, or nonbinary
Abenaki, and people from other indigenous groups,
People of African, Asian, Pacific Island, Chicanx, Latina/o/x, or Middle Eastern descent
•      Groups that have been historically subject to persecution or genocide

In order to put this monumental law into action, a statewide 20 person working group was formed in 2019 and three additional members have been added in 2021. This group will look at statewide educational standards,  rules and policies that impact student academic performance used in public schools.

The heart of this Act 1 is about representation! And in support of the fullest integrity of Act 1, the Education Justice Coalition of Vermont in conjunction with the working group is currently accepting applications to fill one student seat. This position term ends June 2023.

The EDJ Coalition will be accepting applications until all seats are filled. After your application is received, members will contact the finalists for interviews, including checking on references, and next steps.

You can find the meeting notes and upcoming meeting dates by going to the Agency of Education website. Or following this link: https://education.vermont.gov/state-board-councils/ethnic-and-social-equity-standards-advisory-working-group

Training and on-going support will be provided for appointees at no cost throughout the appointment. By law, the State of Vermont provides a stipend and mileage reimbursement for those traveling long distances to participate.

All are encouraged to apply, the only prerequisite a passion for Vermont education.
