We are thrilled to announce that Beena Raghavendran, an expert in community engagement journalism, will be joining the Newsroom Development and Support team as an editor of digital storytelling and training.

Beena comes to The Times from ProPublica, where she was an engagement reporter since 2018. During her time at ProPublica, Beena led numerous crowdsourcing projects, often in collaboration with local journalists. She led mass door-knocking efforts in Annapolis public housing as part of this investigation. She was part of an investigation into medical debt, which won the 2020 Loeb Award for local reporting. And she helped create virtual events, audio recordings and other accessibility tools for a project on services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Prior to ProPublica, Beena was an education reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Beena is the director of the Asian American Journalists Association’s young professionals network and a 2021 Online News Association MJ Bear fellow. We’re eager for Beena to bring her deep community engagement experience to the N.D.S. team and to the newsroom.

Her first day with us will be Sept. 27. Please join us in welcoming her to The Times.
