Initiative in Nashua gives Christmas meals, presents to families in need

Event held Wednesday

35 FAMILIES IN NASHUA DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT’S FOR DINNER OR UNDER THE TREE ON CHRISTMAS. THE FAMILIES ARE BEING TREATED TO EITHER A HAM OR TURKEY DINNER WITH ALL THE FIXINGS AND SOME PRESENTS. IT REALLY MAKES IT FEEL GOOD. AND GET ME IN THE MOOD FOR FOR THE BIG TRIP WITH POLICE VEHICLES DOING DOUBLE DUTY AS SANTAS, REINDEER AND SLEIGH. THE FIRST STOP WAS A PRESCHOOL. THEN IT WAS ON TO MAKE DELIVERIES ALL OVER THE CITY. FOR NASHUA POLICE CHIEF, THIS IS HIS FAVORITE DAY OF THE YEAR. JUST SEEING HOW HAPPY THEY ARE WHEN YOU SHOW UP AND YOU KNOW YOU GOT A BAG FULL OF TOYS AND YOU GOT CHRISTMAS DINNER AND JUST SEEING THE SMILE ON THEIR FACES. THIS IS THE NINTH YEAR FOR THE PROGRAM. THIS STARTED OUT AS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NASHUA, SWAT AND NASHUA. POWELL. NOW INVOLVES MUCH MORE. THE COMMUNITY, FOR INSTANCE, THEY WORK WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HELP IDENTIFY FAMILIES IN NEED. WHEN IT FIRST STARTED, THE PROGRAM WAS ABLE TO HELP EIGHT FAMILIES. NOW, THANKS TO INCREASING DONATIONS, THEY’RE ABLE TO HELP MANY MORE. BIGGER AND BIGGER AND BIGGER. SO THAT’S PARTLY THE DEMAND. BUT PARTLY JUST GOOD. HIRE FOLKS AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND NATIONAL POLICE TO DO MORE. AND DESPITE THE GENEROSITY, THERE IS STILL A FEELING AMONG SOME THAT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE. IT MAKES ME EVER MINDFUL THAT THERE ARE MANY IN NEED IN THIS TIME OF YEAR AND ALL YEAR. AND IT’S A SPECIAL TIME, AND WE TRY TO ACCOMMODATE THOSE THAT WE CAN. UNFORTUNATELY, I DON’T THINK WE WE GET EVERYBODY I
