May Monthly Program

Our speaker this month, James Garretson, will give a presentation based on years of fly fishing and guiding experience and breaks down the thought process that guides use to make game time decisions to provide clients with the best shot possible at opportunities to catch trout. His approach to the water is about thinking “trout first” and adapting strategy and fly selection to the ever-changing trout fishing environment.

James Garrettson was quickly consumed by fly fishing after receiving a copy of the Curtis Creek Manifesto at age 10. At 14 years old James was the youngest employee at Orvis. He has fished coast to coast in the US as well as in Europe, Mexico, and Central America. James is the owner and operator of About Trout, a fly fishing outfitter based on the San Juan River in New Mexico.

Leader’s Line

This year’s Annual Dinner was the most successful one, ever!  More than $18,000 was raised by the attendees.  Where to start with thanking members?

Let’s begin with the Annual Dinner Committee that was chaired by Dale Spear.  Dale did an outstanding job of managing and coordinating a group that gathered prizes, organized the catered dinner, obtained all necessary permits and licenses, and then did all of the innumerable small tasks that are all required for the dinner to be a success. A big thanks to Dale, the good ones make it look easy.

How about that new Master of Ceremonies, Ron Davidson?  Ron did an excellent job of entertaining the crowd and keeping events on schedule.  Ron also did an exceptional job during the raffle to make sure the prizes got to the right folks quickly.

Who else to thank now?  Let me try to name a few:

  • Don Whitecar and the IT crew for smoothly processing all Silent Auction sales plus compiling/tracking all dinner transactions.
  • Mike Churchill and crew for handling the bar.
  • Joey & Chrysta Nizuk for obtaining Silent Auction items and raffle prizes.
  • Ben & TinaLyn Sell for bringing the Silent Auction items and raffle prizes to the dinner venue and then setting them up for display.
  • Chris Kight for handling the cash elements of the proceeds and taking photographs.
  • Frank Stolten for coordinating the Silent Auction items.
  • Mike Howes for printing name tags and distributing raffle ticket envelopes to dinner attendees.
  • Ron Fay for handling the dessert auction.
  • Plus, all those that handled the games and raffles.  Think of the “Net of Cash”, “Hundred Squares” and the “Deck of Cards”.

And then there are the other members of the committee that worked in the background to make the dinner a success.  These are the ones that set things up and took them down and whatever else needed to be done.  These folks are the glue that made the whole dinner work.

The club owes a debt of gratitude to all of them.

See ya on the water.
