KINGSTON – One in 10 people in the Hudson Valley are defined as food insecure, and during the pandemic, the demand at area food banks has increased by 40 percent.

Gateway Hudson Valley has been supporting many of those individuals through its programs and services.

Over the past two years, Gateway’s Senior Mobile Meals program has delivered over 181,500 meals and 3,600 pantry bags to the most vulnerable seniors in Ulster County.

The agency also provides take-home meals to seniors at the Community Cafés, which had to close due to the pandemic.

Gateway continued to provide socially distant support by visiting and communicating with individuals at home, grocery shopping, and purchasing essential items for those who were unable to leave their homes.

The agency also participated in a gleaning project, where volunteers harvested more than 100 pounds of farm vegetables that their food services team roasted and turned into vegetable stew that was distributed by FeedHV to families in need.
