Dear supporter,

As this challenging year continues to surprise us, we hope you are well and safe. Please be assured that, as it has for 35 years, Friends of the Inyo continues its work to protect and care for the Eastern Sierra lands we all value.

The 2021 summer season has seen the high visitation levels we all expected. People continue to flock to our extraordinary lands to experience their beautiful wildness. Friends of the Inyo has been out there to help on the ground.

Our Trail Ambassador Program has been a critical resource for maintaining the health of the ecosystems and trails in the Eastern Sierra for the past four summers.

Whether it is making sure your favorite trails are safe and passable, actively educating trail users about “Leave No Trace” best practices, or leading informative outings, our dedicated Trail Ambassadors, with tools in their hands and smiles on their faces, have been caring for our public lands and helping visitors to enjoy them all summer long. In the 2021 season, we have:

  • Imparted knowledge of Leave No Trace principles to 1,418 visitors;
  • Cared for nearly 400 miles of trail, and removed 71 logs blocking trails; and
  • Cleaned or restored 136 backcountry campsites while removing 213 pounds of trash.

In addition, we led interpretive FREE walks every weekend to help visitors understand just how special our lands are.

We Need Your Help. Funding for our Trail Ambassador Program in 2021 will be exhausted soon, but Stewardship activities continue year-round. Indeed, folks now say that “shoulder season” (the travel period between peak and off-peak seasons) is a thing of the past and we are expecting many more visitors to be impacting our lands through the fall. We are reaching out to ask you to make a special gift at friendsoftheinyo.org/donate.

Together We Can Make A Difference. Please support Friends of the Inyo as we seek to raise funds adequate to maintain the important work of our Stewardship Program in the coming months. Our iconic lands, stretching from the summit of Mt. Whitney, across the desert sagebrush, and including all the meadows, lakes, forests and streams in between, provide a calming respite amidst the storm we face. Our Stewardship Program will work to make sure these outdoor treasures remain healthy and vibrant for all to enjoy. Please join us in the care of these lands that are such an integral part of our wellness as human beings.

Sincerely,

Wendy Schneider
