Democrats’ About Face on Senate Border Aid Bill Rankles Caucus Members

Thursday, Speaker Pelosi made a sudden about face on the border aid war and agreed to pass the Senate’s version of the bill, which has been hotly debated for weeks.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally bowed to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in a weeks-long battle with the GOP over the border aid bill, saying the House will take up the Senate’s version of the relief package.
The move caps four days of havoc amid a contentious debate within Pelosi’s caucus over how to respond to the mounting humanitarian crisis.
In a stunning reversal, Pelosi halted a planned vote on the House Democrats’ version of the border aid bill as she and her deputies faced a revolt by a group of more than 18 Democratic centrists, who vowed to tank the bill on the floor.
In a high-profile surrender in a faceoff with McConnell, Pelosi sent a letter to her caucus explaining her rationale.
“The children come first. At the end of the day, we have to make sure that the resources needed to protect the children are available,” she wrote. “Therefore, we will not engage in the same disrespectful behavior that the Senate did in ignoring our priorities. In order to get resources to the children fastest, we will reluctantly pass the Senate bill.”
Hours earlier, Pelosi had an hour-long call with Vice President Mike Pence during which the two discussed administrative fixes as a possible way to appease Democratic demands for tougher restrictions on the border money, according to a source familiar with the conversation.
McConnell said the White House’s concession to comply with some of the Democratic requests administratively was an attempt by Pence “to be as accommodating as possible.”
The administrative concessions reportedly include the following:
The Trump administration agreed to notify congress within 24 hours of a child dying in custody. And agreed on a 90-day limit for a child in an influx facility. This per two sources familiar with pence/pelosi talks. Both can be done administratively.

According to some reports, caucus members are blaming Senate Minority Leader Schumer for forcing the hand of House Democrats as so many Senate Democrats voted for the bill which passed with a vote of 84-8.

This is in reference to the large senate dem vote total on the border bill. It forced pelosis hand.

The House just cleared a procedural motion to pass the senates border bill. It passed 322-85. That’s a big, big margin for a procedural motion. This bill should sail tonight.

I don’t say things like this much. I try to get along. But I hate these people. Hate is a strong emotion. It’s hard for me to say it. But God help me, I hate them.

Unfortunately I reached that point quite a while ago. I’ve already moved onto wishing we actually had some folks on our side who could find ways to lay down a load of retribution on the Left.

I think I read somewhere that AOC voted AGAINST the House version.
AOC also Tweeted a protection threat to Wayfair, hoping that their employees would find common cause to deny resources to accommodate children at the border.
“A heavy price”, LOL. As if anyone in Washington ever pays a “heavy price” for anything.
I suppose that means that next Wednesday, a couple of Dems will refuse to sit at his table in the Cafeteria. But only on Wednesday.

After months of screeching and refusing to negotiate with the Republicans on any form of border funding, now at the last minute when they absolutely *have* to act, AOC starts screeching that the Dems were not allowed to stuff the bill with their useless crap.
Perhaps she is as unfamiliar with the term “Negotiating in good faith” as she has been proven to be ignorant of other important facts.

Wow. A crushing defeat. The House didn’t do it “fastest”, the Senate did, and made the House look like ogres who held up aid for entirely partisan and petulant reasons. Big-time backfire there.

All that vindictive spiteful statement aside, Pelosi is signing on to humanitarian aid for the children without all the riders seemingly crafted to aid, accelerate, and provide powerful material support for the trafficking of children over the southern border of America.
Please let this be a rare win.

The optics would have been horrible for the lefties, especially after their initial laughable debate. Screaming that they really care about migrants, but then voting against a BIPARTISAN bill would have looked hypocritical indeed. Pelosi was left to choose between AOC and a hard place. The hard place won.
McConnell passed a bipartisan bill 84-8 after Pelosi’s bill bombed, cratered and popped out of the ground in China. If Pelosi had a united caucus, she could have continued the fight. She did not. Credit to McConnell, and yes I understand this is not an ideal or pure victory for conservatives. It is, nonetheless, a heavyweight right hook to the Democrats’ collective jaw. I’m accustomed to political incompetence, so something that is not incompetence deserves my praise.
Sandy might very well have been given a smack down by Pelosi with this move. It passing despite being held in contempt by the all powerful AOC sent a shot across the USS SOC puppet.
The National Socialists don’t care about children, they care about the optics of their actions. I bet internal polling was not looking so swift for them, Schumer saw it, and while he is a hate-filled pus bag he knows when to accept defeat.
The debates, despite the propaganda wing of the DNC praising it, fell flat, the impeachment hopes are not supported by a majority of the people, and the National Socialist control of the House are looking like losers.

When was the last time Democrats folded on a bill negotiation and essentially got nothing, vs. the other way around?
I’m not in love with the Senate Bill, but I struggle to remember the last time the Surrender Caucus, I mean the Republican Party, held any line with Pelosi on an issue like this vs. yielding on a dozen poison pill amendments.

It’s hard for me to see this bill as a win for Trump. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this bill provides $4 BILLION for food, shelter and clothing, etc., for illegals who broke into this country. Win in what sense?
The bill SPECIFICALLY refuses to provide a dime for a wall or for any kind of law enforcement.
If this is a win, what does lose look like?
Apart from what is presently going on with Mexico, seemingly going on, Trump and those of us who support enforcing the law have yet to have a SINGLE win on the border issue.

Isn’t this the “welfare for illegals” bill that contains no money for the wall nor for any other enforcement? Looks more like uniparty kabuki to me. The Democrats get what they wanted simply for allowing Cocain Mitch to appear like he got his way.

I think the bill adds about 30 more immigration judge (with staff) and if I remember correctly, those judges do not have to go through Congress for approval.
More judges, faster review for asylum requests, and faster deportation back to their homes.
I heard that too. Let’s say each judge handles 1 case every 30 minutes, 10 hours per day, 5 days a week, 4 weeks per month. For 30 judges, that’s 12,000 per month. Last month there were 144,000 illegal immigrants detained. Doesn’t seem like that much help.
I also heard 90% don’t come back for the hearings anyway, so maybe it would help with the 10% that actually go to their hearings.
Except I heard today that there are an estimated 1 million illegal aliens who have already been ordered deported, but are still in the country. If we aren’t going to deport them, why bother with the hearings?
I think adding 30 judges is worse than useless. It makes people think they did something to help, when they didn’t.

Encouraging immigration reform, then denying adequate resources? Unconscionable. This is not Libya. Obama is no longer President. Mexico has found common cause with America to pursue emigration reform to mitigate the casualties and collateral damage from immigration reform at both ends of the bridge and throughout. Progress.
I’m waiting for the frustration level to max out, at which point Pelosi will channel John Boehner and utter his favorite excuse :”We run one half of one third of the government. Our options are limited by the Constitution.”

The Dems have been stating categorically, for two years that the crisis at the Southern border was a fake crisis manufactured by President Trump. Now, it has become crystal clear that the crisis is very real. And, if the funds for housing detainees is not made available, people, including children, are going to die.
This is fine with the Dems, as well as some GOP Congress Critters, who can blame it on the Trump Administration. So, what does Trump do? He changes the narrative. He lets everyone know that he is going to start rounding up illegal aliens who are under final deportation orders. At the same time, he continues to point out that it is the responsibility of the Congress to provide the money to provide safe and secure detention facilities for aliens who have entered illegally.
The Congress panics. If they go into the summer recess without funding the detention centers, Trump is going to look good for getting illegal aliens, under final deportation orders, out of the country. And, he will continue to blame the Congress for the conditions in the detention facilities. So, Pelosi, and McConnell, beg him to give them a week or two to come up with money for the housing crisis. If they do, then they can claim that they are doing something to alleviate the “humanitarian crisis” in US illegal alien detention. They will have done something for the “chi’ren”, when Trump begins his deportation campaign.
The more reasonable, and sane, Dems know that they have to pass a funding bill before they recess. So, the Senate passes a funding bill, by a significant majority. The House leadership realizes that if the House bill passes, it is unlikely that the Congress can pass any funding bill before July 4. So, Pelosi decides to bring up the Senate bill, which the House will most likely pass.
So, Trump gets the money to run the detention facilities and, after July 4, he can begin enforcing the final deportation orders. And, the Dem bomb-throwers will do nothing but weaken the Democrat Party, by their obstructionism.
Pelosi and, to a lesser degree, McConnell, HAD to do something immediately, especially with bodies floating in the Rio Grande River. The big problem that Congress faces is that almost the entire body wants open borders. It has to defuse the crisis, as much as it can before the summer recess, or be faced with a real political crisis when the members return. Whether this will be successful or not will become apparent in the future.
These old fools are afraid to tell their constituents and caucus they are there to solve problems, not hate Trump. They created this ridiculous sense of hatred when they conspired with the DOJ/FBI/IRS/MSM/Mueller to overthrow Trump via a coup.
