Calling the museum “long overdue,” Biden said, “Asian-American, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders have literally shaped the history and the contours of this country.” The president was joined at the bill-signing ceremony by Vice President Kamala Harris, the first person of Indian descent to be elected to the position. Harris’ mother was Indian. The measure, the “Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture Act,” would create a commission of eight individuals with expertise in museum planning or Asian Pacific American history and culture to study the possibility of establishing such a museum in Washington, possibly as part of the Smithsonian Institution.
