U.S. Dept. of Education to Promote Critical Race Theory

And Other News

May 12th, 2021

It's Time to Take Action

The U.S. Department of Education recently proposed priorities that will funnel federal grant money to school programs that teach concepts rooted in Critical Race Theory. If adopted, these priorities would fund programs intended for K-12 students.

The Department of Education’s priorities would incentivize public schools to teach our children to focus primarily on their skin color and ethnicity and to view American history solely through a lens of oppression. FAIR believes this is antithetical to the vision of the pro-human movement and opposes the Department of Education’s grant priorities.

All members of the public may submit comments on The Department of Education’s priorities. Thus far, 9,000 comments have been submitted. The deadline to submit comments is May 19th.

Critical Race Theory Legislation

The policies being advanced by the federal government and some states including California have led some state lawmakers to pass legislation banning Critical Race Theory. Several governors across the country have signed bills effectively banning Critical Race Theory from being taught in public schools and seven states have proposed similar legislation.

FAIR seeks to promote legislation that will address neo-racism in education without infringing upon civil rights and liberties.

The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations

After Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology had its race-blind, merit-based admissions test scrapped by the Fairfax County School Board, Asra Nomani delivered a brave testimony to the members of the school board who chose to do away with the admissions process.

Another such parent who has stood up to neo-racism in education delivered a powerful testimony at the Loudon County School Board. While the mother's testimony includes calling for an outright ban on Critical Race Theory, many disagree over whether Critical Race Theory should be banned. Her testimony is still inspiring and highlights the importance of standing up to neo-racism in our schools. At the time of publication, FAIR was not able to verify the mother's name.

Other News

Bonnie Kerrigan Snyder of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) penned a piece for New York Daily News on the worrying trend of teachers assuming the role of activists rather than educators.

“Let’s not forget that there’s a good reason why public school educators are licensed by the states, like doctors, dentists and other practicing professionals; it’s precisely because they’re in a position of public trust with the potential to cause harm to those under their care. The formation of young minds is a sacred task only to be entrusted to responsible, good-faith operators.”

Frederick M. Hess and J. Grant Addison wrote an illuminating piece for The Dispatch that tackles both the logical fallacies of anti-racist scholars Robin DiAngelo and Ibram X Kendi as well as the ideology's potential for disastrous effects on education.

The truth is that the leaders and practitioners of “anti-racist” education don’t appear interested in anything so small as improving education for black and brown children or in teaching students not to be racists. Rather, Kendi, DiAngelo, and their ilk are seeking cultural revolution in the name of an illiberal doctrine that poses a mortal threat to schooling. Anti-racism’s hostility to reason, rejection of civilizational virtue, and labeling of skepticism is not another culture war dog whistle but an assault on the very soul of liberal education.

Pamela Pareksy wrote a piece for Sapir Journal detailing the inherently antisemitic tilt of Critical Race Theory’s perception of Jews. By drawing on the perspective of a Jewish student on campus, Paresky describes how antisemitism has become elemental to the orthodoxy of social justice.

“Simply put, the ‘critical social justice’ movement, informed by critical theory, represents an assault not just on core concepts of liberal democracy, but also on the epistemology that undergirds it.”

Chloe Valdary, the creator of the pro-human diversity training The Theory of Enchantment, wrote an insightful op-ed for Newsweek in which she unravels the ongoing nationwide discussion over Critical Race Theory. Valdary describes how the problem with CRT is much deeper than partisan politics and legislation.

“It stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of the complexities of our social and political realities, reducing them to a single factor: racism. But when it comes to how race and power intersect, black history is far, far richer than critical race theorists allow.”

Last week, FAIR Advisor John McWhorter appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher to discuss the victimhood mindset instilled in many black people as a by-product of Critical Race Theory. McWhorter also detailed his displeasure with being infantilized on the basis of his skin color.

“You read a book like White Fragility which basically says that black people are these hot-house flowers where everybody has to tip-toe around us, and we’re always crying, and we’re always angry, and we’re just so very very delicate - I don’t feel like that person. That book is talking down to me as far as I’m concerned.”

FAIR Advisor Zaid Jilani wrote a piece for Persuasion discussing the Biden administration’s decision to grant financial aid for restaurant owners based on race. Jilani describes the irrationality and potential danger that comes with the decision.

“Using racial stereotypes to approximate the condition of someone’s life has a dark history in the United States, and it remains unlikely to result in government policy that treats everyone fairly.”
