Pine Street African Burial Ground
Brief History of
The Pine Street African Burial Ground
The Pine Street African Burial Ground was discovered in Kingston, NY in 1888 and then abandoned. Later rediscovered by the owner of the house on the land during a basement repair project.
Harambee, Inc was founded by Tyrone Wilson. The Kingston Land Trust asked Tyrone to consider ownership and stewarding the African Burial Ground located at 157 Pine Street in Kingston, NY. In 2021, the Deed was transferred to the ownership of Harambee, Inc. after years of fundraising and building community support and partnerships with KLT and Scenic Hudson.
Since then the land has been surveyed and archived by Professor Joe Diamond and students of the department of Archaeology at SUNY New Paltz, NY. The discovery confirmed that there were human remains of enslaved Africans buried in clustered patches.
The youth design team participated in the envisioning of an architectural design for the African Burial Ground and surrounding area for remembrance, reflection and cultural education.
In August, a second round of areological exactions completed with a new group of students under the guidance of Prof. Joe Diamond of SUNY New Paltz. Join the
