When she was 29, Aisha was teaching at a university when she first noticed that “something didn’t seem right in [her] head.” She would later learn that she was experiencing the early stages of schizophrenia, one of several mental illnesses typified by symptoms of psychosis – a loss of contact with reality, such as hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that others do not) or delusions (beliefs not based in reality).

Luckily, Aisha was soon referred to UPMC’s STEP clinic – one of nine programs around Pennsylvania designed to treat individuals experiencing First Episode Psychosis (FEP). The programs feature a dedicated team of mental health professionals working together to help these young people get their lives back on track as soon as possible – and help prevent future episodes of psychosis from occurring.

NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania knows that these programs work, because the families and individuals we serve have experienced their benefits firsthand.  But don’t just take our word for it – click the video link below to hear it in Aisha’s own words:

We’re asking all of our present and future General Assembly members to join us in supporting Pennsylvania’s First Episode Psychosis programs – and in ensuring that all of our fellow Pennsylvanians can access treatment that truly offers them a lifetime of hope.

Sincerely,
