New Hampshire man shows up at former workplace with loaded AR-15, police say
A Derry man is in custody after police found loaded guns, including an AR-15 rifle, inside his vehicle while they were investigating a report that he made threats of violence against employees of his former workplace, according to authorities.
The Merrimack Police Department said Corey Godinez, 29, faces multiple felony charges: attempted first-degree assault, attempted second-degree assault and criminal threatening. He was also charged with harassment and loitering or prowling.
"I just don't get it," said Rich Hewson, who became an Eagle Scout with Godinez. "I've known Corey for years and it's not his mentality. (He's) a calm guy, very nice demeanor; just a regular guy. This isn't what regular people do."
Police said they responded to the LifeLine Ambulance office off Route 3 Friday for a report of criminal threatening.
LifeLine employees told police that Godinez had made threats of violence toward them after he was fired Thursday, indicating that he "had enough firepower to take people out and that he did not care how many people had to get hurt," according to a media release from the MPD.
While officers were investigating the matter at the LifeLine office, Godinez drove by the building. Officers were able to identify his vehicle and he was subsequently stopped and detained, according to police.
Police said they learned Godinez had weapons inside his vehicle during a roadside investigation, and he was subsequently taken into custody. Officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for his vehicle.
While executing the search warrant, officers seized a loaded handgun and an AR-15 rifle with multiple loaded magazines, as well as additional ammunition.
"No one can predict with 100% certainty what would have happened, but based on the reported state of mind, the fact that he drove to that location, the threats that were made and the fact that he had firearms in the car, I don't think it would be a stretch to say that we might have prevented an active shooter event from taking place there," said Merrimack police Capt. Matthew Tarleton.
Godinez was transported to the Merrimack Police Department and was held on preventive detention.
"Mr. Godinez is no longer an employee of LifeLine Ambulance. We cannot comment further on internal personnel matters," reads a statement from the company. "We appreciate the work of Merrimack police and are cooperating fully with their investigation."
Police said Godinez could face up to 37 years in prison combined if he is convicted on the three felony charges.
He is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Hillsborough County Superior Court South to answer to the charges brought against him.
Tarleton said this was a good case of "see something, say something" because a tragedy was avoided thanks to the employee who spoke out to police.
