As a result of the American Rescue Plan signed by President Biden in March 2021, most Philadelphia families with children are eligible for a new monthly payment from the federal government of $250 or $300 per child that started in July! Here’s what you need to know about the new credit.

What is the Child Tax Credit?

The Child Tax Credit is a credit given to families with children. The American Rescue Plan increased the credit from $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child for children over the age of six and from $2,000 to $3,600 for children under the age of six.

I have a child under 18. Can I get these payments?

Almost all Philadelphia families with children qualify.

If you are:

  • single with income under $75,000,
  • single and file taxes as a head of household with income under $112,500, or
  • married with a combined income under $150,000,

you can get $3,000 each year for children between the ages of 6 – 17, and $3,600 for children under 6. If you have a higher income, you may still be able to get smaller payments.

What do I need to do?

If you have filed tax returns in 2019 or 2020, or signed up to receive the federal stimulus payments, you will receive this payment automatically; you do not need to sign-up or take any action.

If you have not filed tax returns in the last two years or signed up to receive the federal stimulus payments, you can sign-up by completing the non-filer form. The form also allows you to apply for the Recovery Rebate Credit, also known as stimulus payments, if you have any unclaimed payments.

The payments do not count as income, so they will not affect other public benefits like SNAP, TANF cash assistance, SSI, or Medicaid.

You can get help signing up with Campaign for Working Families, a safe and trusted partner of the City of Philadelphia. They can also help you receive any other tax benefits you may qualify for. Visit cwfphilly.org or call 215-454-6483 to get started now!

What do I need to sign-up?

Here’s a list of things you will need to complete the process.

  • Social Security numbers for your children and Social Security Numbers (or ITIN) for you and your spouse
  • A reliable mailing address
  • E-mail address
  • Your bank account information (if you want to receive your payment by direct deposit).

When will I get the payments?

The IRS plans to start sending monthly payments of $250 or $300 per child in July 2021. Sign-up as soon as possible to start getting your payments this summer! You can get the rest of the payments with your refund when you file taxes next year.

What if I am not a U.S. citizen?

If your child has a Social Security Number, you can sign up with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Ask your tax preparer for help requesting an ITIN or go to the IRS site.
