A New In-Person Training Program for Parents and Guardians of 2SLGBTQI Youth

Are you a parent or caregiver to
a 2SLGBTQI child 16 and under?

Egale’s free Affirming Adults workshops can help you learn more about 2SLGBTQI youth and mental health, gender and sexual diversity, and introduce you to practical strategies for creating affirming and supportive spaces.

This training is for parents and guardians of 2SLGBTQI youth ages 16 and under.

Supportive and affirming adults are essential to the health and well-being of 2SLGBTQI youth, and the active role of an affirming adult can be vitally important compared to lukewarm tolerances or discrimination 2SLGBTQI young people may encounter.

Education for supportive adults is an important step in ensuring healthy and affirming conditions are being fostered actively at home and beyond. This is where Egale’s Affirming Adults Supporting 2SLGBTQI Youth comes in.

In-Person Intervention Research

Egale Canada will be conducting research on the effectiveness of the Affirming Adults 101 (Part 1) and Affirming Parents and Caregivers 201 (Part 2) training for parents and caregivers of 2SLGBTQI children who are 16 years old and under. All parents and caregivers who enroll in the workshops and have a 2SLGBTQI child who is 16 years old and under will be automatically enrolled in the process of evaluating the training, which will help us improve it in the future. If you do not wish to participate in the evaluation, please contact research@egale.ca.

What does the research entail?

Participation in the research involves completing:

  1. a short survey (15-20 minutes) prior to the event.
  2. a follow-up survey (15-20 minutes) within 24 hours of completing the training (with the option of filling it out on-site).
  3. a short (15-20 minutes) survey 8-12 weeks after the event.

Participants who complete the follow-up survey 8-12 weeks after the event will be entered in a draw for a chance to win 1 of 5 $25 gift cards.

In addition, we are seeking workshop participants to attend focus groups, in which parents and caregivers of 2SLGBTQI youth will have the opportunity to share their experiences. Participants for the 45–60-minute focus groups will be selected on a first-come first-served basis (12 people over two focus groups). The focus groups will take place online immediately after the training. We will also keep a waitlist for people who wish to participate but are not initially selected.
