Dr. Matthew Wonnacott joined Barton Health in 2017, and was
appointed Chief Medical Officer in 2019. Prior to joining the Barton Health team, he served 12 years as a family physician in the United States Air Force, with stops in Asia, Europe and the United States. His last 10 years were spent as a senior officer in the Air Force Medical Corps.
After leaving the military, Wonnacott had the opportunity to return to a clinical setting and was thrilled to receive an offer from Barton Health.
“I love living in a relatively small community where neighbors and friends watch out for each other both at work and home,” Wonnacott said.

Wonnacott grew up near Zion National Park in a small, rural southern Utah community. In addition to working for Barton Health, the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe drew him in. His children now have the opportunity to live in a similar community to where he was raised.

“Our children are all amazingly wonderful,” he said. “Two of our
children are married and others are in college, but we’re still not empty nesters, with a fun 13-year-old at home.”
With seven children, Wonnacott’s household is vibrant. After having two sons and two daughters, he and his wife were inspired to adopt. One child turned into three, as the Wonnacotts welcomed a sibling trio — whose mother passed in childbirth — to their household.
At Barton Health, Wonnacott has spent countless hours navigating the ever-changing guidelines stemming from the pandemic. He works closely with his team to plan, develop safety protocols, obtain necessary resources and ensure the safety of all Barton Health patients and staff.
“During these times, we’ve developed a medical director council and more efficient quality reporting,” he said. “We’re setting the stage for the development of a medical foundation that provides strength and stability to our system and our physician medical groups.”
Wonnacott’s leadership also played a significant role in the Caldor Fire evacuation. Even through these challenging times, he mentioned he is overjoyed to be part of the Barton Health system as it continues to serve the community. Most of all, he enjoys collaborating with Barton Health team members.
“I find them truly inspiring,” he said. “Everyone plays their unique and vital role in this top-notch health system in order to meet our mission and vision. I’m so grateful to be a small part of a truly tremendous team.”
