WORCESTER, Mass. - A community fridge in Worcester will help people access free food.

On Sunday, the group Worcester Community Fridge held a ribbon cutting for their first community fridge at Fantastic Pizza on Main Street in Worcester. The owner of the pizza shop offered some of his space.

It's a form of mutual aid where they rely on people to donate food items by placing it in the fridge.

There is also a rack nearby for non perishable items to be dropped off. The goal is to connect people through food and get basic necessities to people in need.

Worcester Community Fridge’s founder Maria Ravelli said, “Anybody who is walking by is welcome. Food should not be something people should capitalize on. It should be a free resource so we're doing that here. Anybody can leave what they want. We're partnering with local farms, restaurants, and community members to ensure there is a steady supply of food for people that want it."

Fantastic Pizza owner Saket Lohia said, "We thought it was the best thing to do for the community. We set up a larger space. Being a restaurant, I can provide food all the time. I like doing it for the community. I like giving back.”

Fantastic Pizza was already placing cold sandwiches in the fridge on Sunday morning.

The hope is to have five fridges in locations throughout the city of Worcester by the end of the year.
