Two unconstitutional religious privilege bills are close to becoming law.
If you've been following us, you already know why these bills are so urgent.
HB2648 gives religious organizations a “get out of jail free” card for a dangerous array of laws. It's a wolf in sheep’s clothing, hiding within the legalese of a bill nominally about pandemic restrictions. It forbids the state from imposing any penalty against a religious organization in connection with their exercise of religion. No criminal liability. No civil liability. A complete exemption from the law whenever an organization claims to be exercising religion.
HB2575 requires hospitals to allow visitations from clergy members at all times. This supposedly promises comfort and spiritual guidance to people in situations like the end of life. But the bill's narrow focus on "clergy" leaves behind people without faith.
Having passed the House and now Senate committees, both bills are dangerously close to the Governor's desk. But the pressure you have been putting on lawmakers is mounting. You have already changed the way these bills hare being discussed.
There are three ways we can keep up the heat:
1. Send messages to our Senators and Governor Ducey with just a few clicks using this page.
2. Attend a webinar by civil rights groups taking a deeper look at HB2648 and similar bills across the country on March 30th, 1pm ET.
3. If you are a Request to Speak user who hasn't signed in on HB2648 this month, you still have a chance. Sign in before Senate Rules Monday at 1PM.
We've started a few messages for you.
(We're sending separate emails about each bill to our Senators and the Governor.)
