Unpacking Race, Power, and Privilege in Our Communities

APRIL 25, 2020

The Cambridge School of Weston is excited to host our inaugural diversity, equity, and inclusion conference on Saturday, April 25, 2020. We look forward to welcoming 15 – 20 schools for a day of sharing, collaborative problem solving, and planning.

Announcing Keynote Speaker Julie Lythcott-Haims

We are pleased to announce author and educator Julie Lythcott-Haims as our Keynote Speaker for the inaugural CSW Diversity Conference.

Julie Lythcott-Haims roots for humans. Humans need agency in order to make their way forward; Julie is deeply interested in what impedes us. She is the New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult, an anti-helicopter parenting manifesto which gave rise to one of the top TED Talks of 2016, and now has over 4 million views. Her second book is the critically-acclaimed and award-winning prose poetry memoir Real American, which illustrates her experience with racism and her journey toward self-acceptance. A third book called How to BE an Adult, for young adults, is forthcoming. She is a former corporate lawyer and Stanford dean, and she holds a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard, and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her partner of over thirty years, her mother, and her itinerant young adults.

Schedule of Events

The event will take place at The Cambridge School of Weston, on Saturday, April 25, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The morning will begin with a light breakfast and keynote, followed by facilitated breakout discussions by constituency. Lunch will be served before student performances and presentations. In the afternoon, individual school PODS will meet to create Action Plans, which they will bring back to their respective schools.

REGULAR PRICING

Who Should Attend

Each school will be represented as a “POD,” sending two members from each of the following constituencies: students (grades 7-12), parents, faculty, administrators, alumni/ae, diversity practitioners, and board members. Whenever possible, we encourage heads of schools to participate as well, for a total of 14-15 participants per school. The idea is to get a group of influencers and decision-makers to brainstorm together on an action plan for their school.

Benefits of Attending

The objective of the conference is to deepen the dialogue on race, power, and privilege and the ways in which these topics manifest themselves in our communities. Together we will share best practices and draw upon the perspectives of fellow communities to problem-solve and pursue meaningful solutions.

We will engage a model designed to bring together a number of constituencies from each school, all of whom play a role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at their respective institutions. This presents a rare and invaluable opportunity to bring key stakeholders together at one table so that we may listen to each other, gain perspective, and work together to better our school communities and the lives of our students as they navigate an increasingly diverse global society.
