On Friday, July 29, 2022, the 117th House of Representatives passed HR1808, Assault Weapons Ban, with bipartisan support. 215 House Democrats and 2 House Republicans (Rep. Chris Jacobs and Rep. Dear Members of the 118th U.S. Senate,

Too many Americans are being senselessly gunned down in public spaces in towns and cities across the nation.

On July 29, 2022, the House of Representatives passed HR1808 to ban assault weapons in response to the heartbreaking mass shooting tragedies in Highland Park, Uvalde, Tulsa, and Buffalo. President Joe Biden is ready and willing to sign the bill into law.

With easy access to military-style semi-automatic assault weapons and high capacity magazines, too many individuals have turned our schools, malls, concerts, movie theaters, places of worship, stores, highways, parades, and other public spaces into a war zone filled with terror, devastation and terrible loss.

Military-style semi-automatic assault weapons are designed to efficiently kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time available. There is absolutely no reason for assault rifles, assault pistols, and assault shotguns to be sold on the civilian market.

Congress did not take action after Aurora, Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Orlando, Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Parkland, Pittsburgh and many other devastating mass shooting incidents and the scope of death and destruction caused by gunmen with weapons of war is growing.

Your thoughts and prayers are not enough. We demand that you act now to stop the carnage with an effective federal ban (S.25) on the civilian use of these weapons. NOW is the time to act!

On June 6, 2023, Senator Jon Ossoff cosponsored S25. Now, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin has the votes to markup and pass this lifesaving assault weapons ban legislation in the committee. From June 6-12, 2023, 19-year-old Sam Schwartz who lost his best friend and cousin at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida staged a 7-day #SurvivorSitIn to demand a vote on the assault weapons ban legislation in both chambers of Congress.

After the Covenant School shooting in Nashville on March 27, 2023, THIS LETTER signed by hundreds of organizations, survivors, and advocates to all members of congress to demand a vote on S.25 and H.R. 698 to ban assault weapons onOn March 30, 2023.

118th Congress: Senator Diane Feinstein reintroduced her legislation S.25 to ban assault weapons on 1/23/23 and Representative David cicilline introduced HIS legislation H.R. 698 on 2/1/23. Representative Cicilline retired on May 31, 2023 therefore Representative Lucy Mcbath has assumed the bill.

On November 14, 2022, 250+ gun violence survivors sent THIS LETTER to Senator Chuck Schumer to schedule a vote on the House-passed legislation to ban assault weapons.

HISTORY: CAMPAIGN AGAINST ASSAULT WEAPONS

After the deadly mass shootings in Aurora, Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, Orlando, Las Vegas, Sutherland Springs, Parkland and Pittsburgh, we are saying NO to #WeaponsOfWar! We joined States United to Prevent Gun Violence to establish a broad coalition of 360+ organizations, chapters and allies on a #CampaignAgainstAssaultWeapons.

Assault weapons are the weapons of choice for mass shooters. Ten of the 17 deadliest U.S. mass shootings since Sandy Hook have involved AR-15-style weapons. AR-15s accounted for 1.2% of all guns being manufactured in 1990 and by 2020, AR-15s made up 23.4%. More than 13.7 million AR-15s have been manufactured since the 20 children and 6 educators were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, generating approximately $11 Billion in revenue.

President Bill Clinton signed the assault weapons ban into law in 1994 but President George Bush let the ban expire in 2004.

Louis Klarevas from University of Massachusetts at Boston who wrote “Rampage Nation” collected data on every gun massacre — defined by him as six or more people shot and killed — for the 50 years before 2016. He found that 1) compared to the 10-year period before the ban, the number of gun massacres during the assault weapons ban (1994-2004) period fell by 37 percent, and the number of people dying from gun massacres fell by 43 percent 2) during the 10-year period (2004-2014) after the assault weapons ban lapsed in 2004, there was 183 percent increase in massacres and a 239 percent increase in massacre deaths.
