Help save Alaska's wildlife and 28 million acres of vital public lands! These lands, home to salmon, caribou, and moose, are crucial for local communities and the planet's health. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is accepting public comments for 60 days on this critical issue. Speak up now! Tell the BLM to prioritize clean water, healthy habitats, and food security over industrial development. Your voice can make a difference in preserving these irreplaceable landscapes.
Add your name and tell the BLM to keep protections in place for 28 million acres of Alaska public lands!
Dear Interior Secretary Haaland and Alaska BLM Director Cohn:
Alaska’s BLM D-1 lands support abundant clean water and biodiversity found in few places remaining globally. Lifting the D-1 protections and opening the lands to industrial development would fragment some of our remaining landscapes, harm migratory corridors for large mammals and birds, and degrade important salmon streams that nourish communities and entire watersheds.
In a region already experiencing a rapidly changing climate, opening these public lands to extractive industries will create more stress on fish and wildlife populations and jeopardize the ability of these natural systems to support vital subsistence resources and Alaska Native communities.
In November, 78 federally recognized tribes sent a letter to the Department of Interior requesting that the protections stay in place.
I urge you to retain the D-1 protections on all 28 million acres under review. With so many future uncertainties, it makes good sense to take a precautionary approach to public land management and preserve our Nation’s last best places for generations.
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this important decision.
Sincerely,
