Expanding the Sanctuary
Since 2008, Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest has served as a model for the care of chimpanzees in sanctuary. Chimpanzees Annie, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy, and Negra are proof that love and commitment can erase a traumatic past.
We had already begun our expansion when we learned of the closing of Wildlife Waystation and the 42 Chimpanzees in Need. Thanks to donors of the Bring Them Home campaign, we were able to act fast to provide an immediate starter home for three of the chimpanzees, Honey B, Willy B, and Mave. We continued to raise funds and further expand and we were able to bring another group group of six to the sanctuary in 2021: Lucky, Cy, Gordo, Terry, Rayne, and Dora.
In 2023, we completed a large open-top outdoor habitat called The Bray, named in memory of James Douglas, which allowed the integrated group of nine chimpanzees from Wildlife Waystation to be outside without bars overhead for the first time.
Now, we are focused on expanding our infrastructure to better care for everyone and enable small educational donor visits. These plans include the construction of a support building and a second caregiver house on-site. This will be followed by future primate housing in the coming years!
Help us give them the HOME they deserve.
