Tenure-Track Associate or Full Professor – Environmental Policy & Advocacy

The newly-formed, generously-funded, and rapidly-developing Department of Environment & Sustainability at Catawba College seeks to add a Tenure-Track Associate or Full Professor of Environmental Policy & Advocacy to their dynamic, collegial, and progressive faculty cohort.  This will be a full-time, nine-month faculty appointment beginning in August, 2019. Responsibilities include, among others, teaching in the Department’s Concentrations in Sustainable Planning & Leadership, Natural Resources Management, and Environmental & Outdoor Education, introductory courses on Air-, Water-, and/or Land-related environmental science, and interdisciplinary special topics courses in the applicant’s additional areas of strength or interest.

The successful candidate with have promising track records in undergraduate teaching and/or equivalent professional experience, their own active policy-, advocacy-, and/or research-based programs and peer-reviewed and/or professional publications, student- and intern-centered directed mentorship, and teamwork as a part of a close-knit academic or professional program.  Teaching requirements will be a combination of 3-4 lecture sections per semester, in addition to independent studies and mentorship on an ad hoc basis.  Departmental responsibilities will include collaborating on curriculum review and development, new course creation, student advising, and being a point of contact for interested student recruits, among others.  College-level responsibilities generally expect participation on 1-2 academic committees on a rolling basis.

Candidates with strength in Environmental Policy and Advocacy, with particular interest in (but not limited to) a combination of: domestic and international environmental law, environmental impact assessment, policy development and enforcement, domestic and/or global environmental movements or organizations, climate change, climate monitoring and related accords/law, biodiversity and habitat conservation, and/or social justice, are particularly encouraged to apply.  PhD, JSD/SJD, or equivalent degree and professional experience required (final stage ABD accepted for application, must be conferred before May, 2019).

Catawba College is a small, dynamic college with a liberal arts foundation located in Salisbury, NC, approximately 45 minutes from Charlotte and Greensboro-Winston Salem.  We offer a 3-2 BS/MEM collaboration with Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, diverse study abroad opportunities, generous scholarship support for undergraduate Environment & Sustainability majors, as well as excellent departmental support to augment faculty teaching and research/advocacy development.
