Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center seeks volunteers

Duties may include meeting and greeting visitors, answering questions about the forest, operating the center store, taking phone calls and even emceeing Saturday morning educational programs, Hemphill said.

The center also needs help setting up and breaking down tables, chairs and displays during the summer programs, according to Hemphill.

Walking across the highway to Wheeler Gorge Campground to recruit an audience for the programs may also be among a volunteer’s responsibilities.

An ideal candidate might be a retired person or senior citizen who has a great deal of knowledge about Los Padres National Forest, but not necessarily a lot of knowledge about the center and what it does, Hemphill said.

People 21 and older are encouraged to apply, and volunteers will be groomed for the positions and mentored by Hemphill, he said.

The first dedicated visitor center in the 100-year history of the forest, WGVC offers information on the flora and fauna, geography, geology and natural history of Los Padres.

People heading into the forest can get trail and camp information and maps, and Adventure Passes, which are required to park at the Piedra Blanca Trailhead in Rose Valley.

The center also offers snacks, drinks and forest-related memorabilia.

The center, which opened in 2001 and operates year-round (except on Thanksgiving and Christmas), can see upward of 50 visitors on Saturdays, according to Hemphill.

Sunday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but for the time being only Saturday help is needed, Hemphill said.
