One of the rarest penguins in the world is being threatened with extinction from a deadly disease. But thanks to the support of our donors, Dr. Janelle Wierenga and her team are making breakthroughs that could save this critically endangered animal. This vital research is made possible by donors like you, dedicated to helping vulnerable wildlife. Find out how you can support wildlife research at Morris Animal Foundation: https://lnkd.in/gvmQ8Vzg

About us
Morris Animal Foundation is a global leader in supporting scientific research that advances veterinary medicine. Since our founding, we’ve invested nearly $160 million toward more than 3,000 studies that have improved the health and quality of life for dogs, cats, horses and wildlife around the world. These studies have led to better preventions, diagnostic tools, treatment protocols and even cures for what ails the world’s animals. Some of these breakthroughs have become industry gold standards and are used in every veterinary practice in the country.

Chimpanzees were observed eating bat guano or poop for the first time, and scientists are concerned the behavior could help new diseases spread to humans. Researchers believe the animals turned to eating bat guano after losing the plant source that provided them with essential minerals to tobacco farming practices. Bat guano is a rich source of minerals but exposes the animals to a troubling number of new viruses. Scientists warn that this newly observed behavior could be a potential new way for bat viruses to be transmitted to chimpanzees and potentially spillover into other species, including humans. Scientists are leveraging AI to test a new approach for detecting cancer early. If successful, the findings could help identify dogs with one of the most common types of lymphoma earlier, opening new doors for cancer prevention. An estimated 3 billion animals were caught in the fire zone during the Australian bushfires that began in 2019. Yet despite the courageous efforts of volunteers, new research funded by our foundation revealed wildlife rescue and rehabilitation rates were much lower than expected. Learn why and the many ways this research will help inform future wildlife conservation efforts globally: https://lnkd.in/d5si99Df

New insights into domestic and wild cat evolution were revealed by our researchers in their latest addition to the cat genome. The canine genome was completed over a decade ago, and thanks to donor support, our researchers can work toward giving our feline friends the same advantages this scientific tool has to offer. We are now accepting research proposals to advance the health and welfare of domesticated horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. For racehorses and wild equids, the Foundation will consider proposals likely to benefit the broader equine community. This request for proposals encompasses four award types: Established Investigator, Pilot Study, First Award and Fellowship Training. All applicants must demonstrate a clear understanding of the health problem, possess sufficient expertise to conduct the study, implement a scientifically sound approach and consider the overall environmental impact of their research. If you own a dog over 10 and live in the North Carolina area, you can help scientists and dogs around the world! Researchers funded by our foundation are recruiting dogs to participate in a clinical trial monitoring how frailty progresses in senior dogs over time and activity impacts their well-being. Some dogs in the study will receive rehabilitation therapy treatment. All dogs will receive lots of snuggles from the research team as well as yummy (and diet-appropriate) treats.
