Individual farmers, as well as the State of Iowa, stand to benefit from expanding carbon markets and other opportunities related to reducing net carbon dioxide emissions through various management practices. We will present a question-and-answer session on the opportunities and barriers to the adoption of climate-friendly farm practices. The speakers will address topics on:
- Climate smart agriculture practices and carbon capture
- Economic opportunities in removing carbon from the atmosphere
- Lessening CO2 emissions through crop rotations, fertilizer practices, and other cropping and livestock system decisions
The session will be entirely virtual and will consist of a short, guided Q&A with plenty of time available to submit questions and discuss these topics.

About the speakers:
Mahdi Al-Kaisi- Professor Emeritus, Department of Agronomy, ISU
Dr. Mahdi Al-Kaisi's research interest focuses on the effect of cropping systems, tillage systems, and crop residue management on soil health, soil carbon dynamics, and greenhouse gas emission. Additionally, his research interests include the interaction effects of agriculture practices and environmental factors (i.e., climate change) on agriculture systems sustainability and productivity.
Alejandro Plastina- Associate Professor, Department of Economics, ISU
Dr. Alejandro Plastina is an Associate Professor/Extension Economist in the Department of Economics at Iowa State University (ISU). His area of specialization is agriculture production and technology, with an emphasis on farm business and financial management. His research focuses on the socioeconomic drivers of conservation practices, voluntary pest resistance management, carbon programs, and agricultural productivity.
Ron Rosmann- Harlan, IA
Rosmann Family Farms, a business owned and operated by Ron and Maria Vakulskas Rosmann and sons, is located four miles northwest of Harlan, in Shelby County, Iowa. the 700-acre certified organic farm is home to four generations of Rosmann families dedicated to sustainable agriculture and today services as a model for community-based food systems and agroecological diversity.
