Tell the Mt. Hood Forest Service they cannot ignore climate change!
Since the 1990s the US Forest Service has been studying the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems, carbon stores, watersheds, and social and economic conditions. Yet, when Bark requested that the Forest Service quantify the emissions that would come from the 2017 North Clack Timber Sale they declined, saying the Mt. Hood Forest Management Plan did not require it. When we asked them to consider the carbon capacity lost and carbon initially emitted by the 2018 Crystal Clear Timber sale, again they declined, saying that "Climate change occurs on a global scale. This Proposed Action's contribution to the cumulative effects on global greenhouse gases and climate change would be negligible."
The Forest Service knows that commercial-scale logging isn't compatible with climate resiliency, but they continue to manage for perpetual, industrial harvest. There are actions the Forest Service could be taking through forest management to better help this region adapt to climate change. Submit your personalized comment today!
