CARES Grants

Relief Funds for Cultural Institutions

Humanities Montana has provided nearly $400,000 in grants to the state’s museums, historic sites, and cultural institutions affected by the COVID-19 health crisis. At this time, all CARES grant funding has been expended.

The grants can be used to cover general operating costs including salaries, rent, and utilities, as well as costs associated with providing online public programs. There are no matching funds requirements. Awards were announced within two weeks of application.

The funds were part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) passed by Congress in March. The $2 trillion aid package included $75 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities, approximately $30 million of which will be sent to fifty-six state and territorial humanities councils to redistribute to humanities nonprofit organizations in need.
