July 26, 2021 – With nearly nine years of data and samples collected and stored, researchers from around the world are making use of our vast store of Golden Retriever Lifetime Study data. Results from the completed projects are making their way through the veterinary community to help improve dog health and we’re excited about all the projects in progress!
STUDYING THE MICROBIOME OF OBESE AND LEAN STUDY PARTICIPANTS
This ongoing study is looking at gut microbe differences between overweight and lean dogs to understand the ways microbes influence body condition.
RISKS RELATED TO ESTIMATES OF INBREEDING
This completed study used data to determine how inbreeding affects adult body size and litter size.
LOOKING FOR LINKS BETWEEN DIET AND DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY
Researchers are in the process of analyzing data to look for links between certain dog food ingredients/ formulations and heart disease in the cohort.
IDENTIFYING GENETIC LINKS TO OBESITY IN GOLDEN RETRIEVERS
This active study is looking for a potential genetic marker for obesity in golden retrievers.
COMPARING LAB TEST RESULTS OF DOGS WITH DIFFERENT BODY CONDITIONS
This active study is examining if lab test results are influenced by body condition.
COMPARING LAB TEST RESULTS OF DOGS FED A RAW DIET AND A COOKED DIET
This active study is determining if test results are altered in dogs fed a raw diet, an important consideration for veterinarians when interpreting data.
EARLY DETECTION OF LYMPHOMA
A new study is looking at bloodwork in dogs with lymphoma to see if researchers can identify early markers of the disease as a first step toward creating a new diagnostic test.
MARKERS OF PREMATURE AGING
This new study is looking at heritable and accrued changes to DNA structure in dogs diagnosed with cancer, that may indicate a premature aging process linked to disease risk.
FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH STUDY COMPLIANCE
A completed and published study looked at the factors that kept Study participants active after their first year.
EXTERN PROJECT
Our extern from the University of Wisconsin helped on an ongoing project focused on geo-coding proximity to environmental pollutants as a risk factor for lymphoma.
HUMAN-TO-DOG TRANSMISSION OF COVID-19
This new project will look at evidence of infection in banked samples from the cohort.
CAPSTONE PROJECTS
This summer, our team will be helping three DVM/ Master of Public Health students from Colorado State University with their capstone projects using health data from the cohort.
