Austin Energy says a scammer impersonating the recently deceased Burt Reynolds is targeting utility customers.

The fake Burt reportedly tells customers over the phone they have a past due bill ranging from a few hundred dollars up to $1,000. Then they demand payment by cash or gift card and say they will call back for payment.

So far, no one has fallen for the scam. Austin Energy says they will never call customers with cut-off deadlines -- and would never ask for credit card or wire transfer information over the phone, or ask for payment with cash or gift card.

Anyone who has received such a call and is uncertain of their account status can call the City of Austin Utilities Customer Contact Center at 512-494-9400.
