A safe, healthy, positive and inclusive school climate is the foundation upon which all work in schools should rest upon. School climate is a leading factor in student learning and achievement.
School climate impacts how students feel, how they learn, their willingness to get involved, contribute, and their sense of self and others.
A high and increasing number of Washington youth report feeling sad, hopeless, anxious, or having suicidal thoughts (WA Healthy Youth Survey Results 2018).
School climate matters, and Washington’s commitment to increasing inclusion, reducing the mental health crisis students are experiencing, and increasing outcomes for our students furthest from educational opportunity requires school climates that anchor in respect, equity, dignity, honesty, justice, and safety. Relationships matter, and positive relationships thrive in a healthy school climate and culture.
If the legislature recognizes that schools have the responsibility to promote conditions designed to create, maintain, and nurture a positive social and emotional school and classroom climate, then adoption of a model policy for creating positive social and emotional school and classroom climates must be mandatory, not optional.
Adoption of the policy will leverage the importance of this work in schools and prioritize it.
