Make Sincere Dua for Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr or The Night of Power is a night during the month of Ramadan described in the Quran as “better than a thousand months” (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3). Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights of Ramaadan to a greater extent than at any other time, in the hopes of catching these exponential rewards.

The actual date is not known and subject to change each year. It is said that it is one of the last 10 nights, likely an odd number. Muslims strive to increase their devotion during this period with the hopes of reaping the full rewards of Laylatul Qadr. Imagine, any action done on this night – reading the Quran, remembering Allah, making sincere Dua, giving in charity – is better than doing the same action for one thousand months; that is more than 83 years, more than the average lifetime!

Dua Is the Weapon of the Believer

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“There is nothing that is more noble in the sight of Allah than Dua.”

(Tirmidhi)

Dua is then the essence of worship, a direct link between human beings and their Lord. When the believer supplicates, s/he is acknowledging the ultimate sense of humility, freeing him/herself of arrogance, surrendering to the power of Allah Almighty.

In the Quran, we are also promised that Allah hears.

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near to them. I respond to the supplications of the supplicant when he calls on Me.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186)

Dua is commonly referred to as the “weapon of the believer.” In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged us to:

“Ask Allah from His bounty, for verily Allah loves to be asked.”

(Tirmidhi)

During Ramadan, and especially in these last 10 days – with a special focus on catching Laylatul Qadr – we need to concentrate on making the best Dua. Make a personal list and write it down, identifying everything you need from Allah. The list should include personal struggles, things you need assistance with, desires you have for yourselves and your family. Now is the time to beg Allah for His assistance, His guidance, His forgiveness. And be sure to call upon Him by His Most Beautiful Names.

Here are 15 duas for Laylatul Qadr that should be included in every list.

  1. Oh Allah, Al-Khaliq, The Creator of All Things! Help me to fully appreciate the awesome nature of Your creation, to learn from it, to utilize what is good from it, to refrain from harm caused by greed, ignorance, and waste, and to take seriously my role as a vicegerent to protect all living and nonliving parts of it.
  2. Oh Allah, Ar-Rahman, the Most Beneficent, Ar-Raheem, the Most Merciful! Shower me with Your mercy in this world and eternal salvation in the Hereafter.
  3. My Lord, Al-Mumin, The Inspirer of Faith! Purify my intentions, eliminate all doubt, and inspire me to do everything for Your sake with sincerity and commitment to You alone.
  4. Oh Allah, Ar-Razzaq, The Sustainer and The Provider! Bring me Halal means to take care of my expenses, to eliminate my debts, to use for the benefit of my family and my community, and to share with those who are less fortunate and are in need.
  5. Oh Allah, Al-Adl, The Most Just! Relieve the suffering of those who have experienced hardship, oppression, and injustice, particularly our brothers and sisters in areas devastated by war, ruthless dictatorships, political turmoil, and natural disasters.
  6. My Lord, As-Samad, The Satisfier of All Needs! Cure those who are sick and those who have chronic illnesses, and restore them to good health so that they can continue in Your service.
  7. Oh Allah, Al-Hasib, The One Who Takes Account! Accept the good that I have done and inspire me to be of benefit to myself, my family, my community, the Ummah, and all of humanity.

  10. Oh Allah, Al-Haadi, The Ultimate Guide! Help us to spread the beautiful light of this Deen throughout the land, open the hearts of those who lack direction to the Truth, free them from the evils of this world, and keep them firmly on the Straight Path.
  11. Oh Allah, Al-Kareem, The Most Generous! Help me to serve my parents with kindness and gentleness, in a manner that is of comfort to them and pleasing to You.
  12. My Lord, You are Al-Aleem, The All-Knowing, and Ar-Rashid, The Righteous Teacher! Bless me with beneficial knowledge and help me to implement it and act upon it in my daily life.
  13. Oh Allah, Ar-Rauf, The All Clement! Extend Your clemency and mercy on the souls of those who are deceased, make their graves of wide expanse, and fill them with light as they await the Day of Judgement.
  14. Oh Allah, Al-Muhaymin, The Guardian! Watch over and protect our Ummah, strengthen the bonds between us, and help us live in accordance with Your guidance and following the beautiful example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.
  15. Oh Allah, Al-Ghaffaar, The Most Forgiving, Al-Afuu, The Eliminator of Sins! Forgive me for my sins, those I am aware of and those that I am unaware of, and eliminate them from my record; help me to also extend forgiveness to those who have wronged me knowingly or unknowingly.

Add additional Duas that pertain to your own situation and needs. These can be for work or education, for a spouse, for your marriage, for your children, and so on. Push yourself to reflect on the list for a couple of days, ensuring that you make it comprehensive, that you make the most of these very special days and nights. There is no better return on your time than the potential of gaining the reward of accepted Duas for Laylatul Qadr, the reward times a thousand months!

May Allah accept our sacrifice for His sake alone and our sincere Duas, and grant us the best in this life and in the Hereafter. Ameen.
