Dear AFP South Dakota Members,
We have an opportunity to interact with Mike Geiger, president and CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, during our Board of Directors meeting this month. Mike has pledged to be available to chapters and has followed through on that pledge by accepting our invitation.
The AFP SD Board would like to welcome all members to join the meeting at 10:30 a.m. MDT/11:30 a.m. CDT on Tuesday, July 14 for Mike’s talk with us. (Zoom login information will be emailed to AFP SD members). He expects to visit with us for about fifteen minutes.
We have asked him to:

How did you become interested in the fundraising field?
I started as an intern in program development at the United Way in St. Cloud. A campaign member left and I was offered the full time position and jumped in. Following my time in St. Cloud I went back to Nebraska where I was raised and received my master’s degree, from there I worked at the United Way of the Midlands and eventually landed at the Sioux Empire United Way here in Sioux Falls. I have worked for United Way’s for 10½ years total.
Tell us about your employer and what is your current position.
Ten years ago this July I founded Maximizing Excellence and began my work as a consultant. I have worked with 116 non-profits over the past 10 years.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The moment when volunteers and staff see it all coming together. That is pure joy! Hitting goal of course is fun too!
Why are you an AFP member?
It is critically important to invest in the industry. AFP is my professional family. It is always important to hone skills and learn from peers.
How long have you been an AFP member?
Since 2012.
Tell us about your family.
Cindy lives in Salem along with her husband Kent who farms. She is the proud Mom to two kiddos – Alex (8) and Maddie (5).
What kind of music is in your car, or what do you listen to on the radio?
Music is a huge part of my life. I have been to over 400 concerts. I listen to XM Radio – usually 99.9 or the new “Stay at Home” station. I love the Dave Matthews Band they are my favorite.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Trust the volunteer.
What is something you are optimistic about?
I am optimistic that our industry is going to be seen as more than just fundraising. I am also optimistic that we will all become better fundraisers after this. That’s cool – who doesn’t want to be a better fundraiser!
