A Harlem native is making his name known for the enormous amount of work he’s done in the Bronx and beyond, helping local residents have food and advocating for the Black community.
When people meet Larry Scott Blackmon, they realize the only thing that could possible outweigh his accomplishments and resume is his charisma. But the vice president of public affairs for FreshDirect is all about hard work.
Blackmon has been grinding at FreshDirect since 2014, from helping Bronx residents gain employment to holiday food giveaways. But his biggest challenge came as COVID-19 hit the world.
Blackmon’s team worked with the city to create the Five Borough Feeding Program to provide over 6 million pounds of food to those in need.
"Food pantries were trying to figure out how they could still service New Yorkers. FreshDirect stepped up to the program and I was happy to lead that effort,” says Blackmon.
Blackmon’s outreach stretches far beyond his Hunts Point office — he’s worked for the city’s Parks Department, local government and servers on the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of New York.
He recently added another title that keeps him going too: cancer survivor.
"I've dedicated my life going forward to be an advocate for Black men to get screened and tested for cancers, particularly prostate cancer,” says Blackmon. “God didn't see fit to call me home and told me I have much more work to do."
