Maryknoll Affiliates

Seeking Global Community

We gather in small groups to be in mission to the world. Though each group is unique, all strive to build expanding circles of compassion through our practice of the pillars of Spirituality, Global Vision, Community and Action.

Our Mission

Maryknoll Affiliate Logo

Maryknoll Affiliates, while continuing to pursue their own life journeys, commit themselves to the mission goals of Maryknoll in the context of chapters that gather for prayer, reflection, and action. Maryknoll Affiliates challenge one another to witness to mission as a way of life by going beyond borders, locally and globally, walking with the poor and excluded, and striving for peace and justice for all of God's creation.

We believe that everyone should be treated equally and with dignity, no matter what their circumstances. We accept that each of us is different in our own special way, but all have the common qualities that make us humans, and each one of us should be treated with respect and virtue. No person should be discriminated against because of gender, religion, sexual orientation, language, culture, ethnicity or political, national, or social origin.

We acknowledge respect for all creation, including our brothers/sisters in all countries and communities. We are part of this cultural diversity, and our chapters cross borders—not only geographical, but of coexistence, communication, and interaction. Affiliates strive to practice these beliefs, along with the four pillars of Maryknoll Affiliates, in our daily lives. We believe that when we Affiliates practice these beliefs, our own individual mission will be revealed, helping us along the path to a more enriched and fulfilling life.

Our Story

Desiring to live out a faith Journey in a world that is becoming Increasingly interconnected and more fragile and fragmented, Maryknoll Affiliates gather in over 45 chapters (sometimes called small mission communities) spread throughout the US, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Guided by our four pillars of Community, Spirituality, Global Vision and Action, we affirm our belief that God's love invites all human beings into a fullness of life. Whether serving internationally or cross-culturally in a local context, we seek especially to be in solidarity with the poor, the oppressed, and the excluded. We are continuously enriched by encounters with the life and experiences of diverse peoples and inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of adversity and suffering.

As part of the Maryknoll Movement, Maryknoll Affiliates focus on mission. We are all called to reach out to the other, whether to the poor and marginalized in a distant country or to those next to us. Through short-term service and immersion experiences, Maryknoll Affiliates find opportunities to respond to this call.

Mission service/immersion experiences are educational. After they return, Affiliates can share what they learned during their service/immersion with their chapter and, when possible, with the local community, parish, schools, or other interested groups. The understanding they bring home enriches Maryknoll's story and brings it to new audiences.

Maryknoll Affiliates can cooperate with anyone who promotes, protects, defends, and saves lives. This includes any activity with anyone who addresses the forces threatening the life of the human species and our planet. These new challenges of the 21st century call all Maryknollers to participate in “partnerships without borders.
