In a secretive ex parte court action, a handful of past and present KPFA local station board members attempted to have all the assets of Pacifica Radio , including 5 radio station licenses, 3 studio buildings and all the funds in station and foundation accounts, transferred to an attorney in Rancho Cucamonga named Matthew Taylor under a court-supervised receivership. Per their own filing, the estimated value of the public assets they were seeking was $130 million dollars.
This small group had secretly set up their own nonprofit organization under the name Pacifica Safety Net, controlled by themselves, to receive assets from their hand-picked agent. Documents are available for review on pacificainexile.org, including the court summons, judicial ruling and nonprofit articles of incorporation.
Take action to condemn this attempted theft.
Pacifica Radio was the nation's first public media network and remains the only national media network held by a public membership organization with tens of thousands of members. The network holds five major market FM radio licenses in New York, Washington D.C., Houston and Northern and Southern California. Southern California's KPFK is the nation's largest nonprofit radio property west of the Mississippi River.
While the Superior Court denied their request, it is time for the members to tell them their actions are unacceptable and demand that our elected boards hold them accountable.
