Nearly three months after the deadliest mass shooting in our nation's history, Congress continues to shirk its responsibility and has failed to take action to ban “bump stocks”, a type of trigger accessory that allows a semi-automatic rifle to simulate fully automatic gunfire. Bump stocks convert guns into rapid-fire assault weapons that have no place in on the streets of our neighborhoods.
With a majority of Congressional lawmakers and the Trump administration beholden to the NRA, we must rely on our Maryland leaders to protect us by passing a ban on accessory devices and ensure faithful enforcement of our current lifesaving gun safety laws.
Unfortunately, Governor Hogan has not yet voiced his support for this common sense proposal. In fact, he has only responded to questions about a bump stock ban in Maryland by saying it’s ‘worth discussing.’
Rather than strengthening our gun laws, Governor Hogan has weakened our safety standards of issuing concealed carry permits, by allowing a citizen board to overturn the Maryland State Police’s denials at every turn. He is following in the footsteps of Congress which has not only failed to pass a bump-stock ban, but the House of Representatives has prioritized WEAKENING our nation’s gun laws and passed Concealed Carry Reciprocity, which will invalidate many of Maryland’s high standards of issuing concealed carry permit.
Marylanders want more than discussion that never turns into concrete action. We want leaders who care about the safety of our neighborhoods and schools. Hogan’s waffling is the same response and inaction demonstrated by Republicans in Congress, allowing the NRA to impede meaningful policies to reduce gun violence.
Sign the petition to demand Governor Larry Hogan put the safety of Marylanders above his allegiance to the NRA and ask him to fully support a ban on bump stocks and other trigger accessories.
