Reporting to the Executive Director, Carnegie Elective Classifications, the Director, Elective Classification for Community Engagement (hereafter, Director) supports the administration of the Carnegie Higher Education Elective Classification system; this role will lead the direction of the Elective Classification for Community Engagement.

This role will also direct other higher education research projects, grants, and other initiatives as assigned. The Director is responsible for the oversight and administration of the Elective Classification for Community Engagement, including stewarding the community engagement advisory committee, grant development and reporting, training design and facilitation, managing national relationships, and ongoing network and coalition building. The Director will work in collaboration with the Electives leadership to support the collaborative development of new classifications, review processes and consultant teams, and other projects as assigned. Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, and organize a diversified workload with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Administers the Carnegie Higher Education Elective Classification for Community Engagement.
  • Directs the national community engagement advisory committee.
  • Supervises and manages projects for classification implementation.
  • Supervises and oversees project management for classification development.
  • Is responsible for fostering existing relationships and building new connections through collaboration with national partners.
  • Creates and facilitates capacity building events, webinars and informational sessions for prospective campuses and the current network.
  • Grant tracking and reporting.
  • Research administration.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • This position requires approximately 30% domestic travel.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and deep understanding of community engagement within the higher education context
  • Knowledge of the Carnegie Foundation and Classification systems
  • High level of written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate in a clear, informative and concise manner, presentation skills
  • Technology skills including Microsoft 360 products and Google Workspace
  • Strong attention to detail skills
  • Oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills including presentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds and ideologies with a commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Ability to handle, process, and preserve sensitive and confidential information and material
  • Ability to commit to facilitating a continued culture of collaboration and inclusion between the Carnegie Elective Classifications and our partner networks

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in higher education or closely related field required; doctoral degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience, including 5-7 years’ experience in higher education leadership required
  • Experience with associations, networks, and other higher education organizations required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Spanish language skills
  • Grant writing skills

Working Conditions:
This position is open to a fully remote, hybrid, or in-person schedule. General office duties conducted within a professional office setting. Position will necessitate occasional work outside of regular 8:45 AM – 4:45 PM office hours, i.e. evening and/or weekend work. Occasional in-state and out-of-state travel required. Some light to medium lifting (10-40 lbs.) may be required.
